Interpretation Effects

These effects are chosen by playing a specific card.

Cups

These effects can only be chosen if you played a Cups card.

  • Analyze: Opponent reveals their Present.
  • Anticipate [Setback]: Choose an ally. On their next turn, they can perform the Select and Reveal steps after their opponent has.
  • Lookout [Triumph]: Increase a chosen ally or foe’s Awareness by 1, not to exceed their Maximum Awareness.

Pentacles

These effects can only be chosen if you played a Pentacles card.

  • Misdirect: Reduce the opponent’s Awareness by 1.
  • Trap [Setback]: Choose an ally. Their next Revealed card’s value is increased by half the Stress dealt by the opponent this turn (rounded up, minimum 2).
  • Plot [Triumph]: Choose an ally. The next time they would Draw a card, they can instead look at the top three cards of their Future and Select one. Put the Selected card into their Present and put the others on the top or bottom of their Future in any order.

Swords

These effects can only be chosen if you played a Swords card.

  • Glare: Deal 1 Stress to a foe. If the foe dealt Stress to you this turn, deal 2 Stress instead.
  • Brace [Setback]: Reduce the Stress you take this turn by half (rounded down, minimum 1).
  • Break [Triumph]: Burn a foe’s Revealed card.

Universal

These effects can be chosen regardless of the suit of the card that was played.

  • Press: Deal 1 Stress to the opponent.
  • Devastate [Success, Triumph]: Deal Stress to the opponent equal to the difference between the values of your Revealed cards.
  • Help: Choose an ally. Their next Revealed card’s value is increased by 1.
  • Hinder: Choose a foe. Their next Revealed card’s value is decreased by 1.
  • Study: Learn something about the challenge you are facing. Below are examples, but don’t feel limited to only these:
    • The most or least common suit in a foe’s deck
    • The highest or lowest value card in a foe’s deck
    • A special ability a foe or Effort has.
    • Any special criteria that must be satisfied to affect a foe or Effort.
  • Fall Back [Setback]: Remove yourself from this Conflict. You can choose to re-enter it with different narrative positioning at a later time by Blind Burning.

Wands

These effects can only be chosen if you played a Wands card.

  • Deja Vu: Choose an already chosen option.
  • Lucid Shift [Setback]: All allies in the conflict gain an Oneirogen and can look at the top of their Future. If they wish, they can move that card to the bottom of their Future.
  • Confuse [Triumph]: The opponent can’t Select the same suit as their currently Revealed card on their next turn. If this is impossible (i.e. they only have that suit or are forced to Select it due to some other effect), then the value of the card is changed to 0.
